What’s a nice place to raise a kid in the US?

My wife and I have a three year old son. Currently we live in a town in New Jersey which we hate and which has a lot of crime. We’ve saved up a lot over the years so that I can start my own business, and have decided to move (and no, we don’t want to leave America, so no places outside the US please). Where we move is very flexible – our first choice is small but not suburban towns, but anything is possible. Where are some nice places to raise a kid? The more detailed you are, the better. Thanks!

Central Oregon is nice. We have a lot of health conscious people and plenty of outdoor recreational areas. The crime rate is low and the schools are good. We are within a few hours of the coast and the cities of Portland and Eugene. The only real problem is the lack of diversity….most people are Caucasian
